The Birth of a Nation: Slavery, Resistance and Abolition

Dr. Marjorie Brown

Join us as Dr. Marjorie Brown offers a timely analysis of the recent film, The Birth of a Nation. While controversy surrounding the film’s director and star has dominated the public discourse, Brown will guide us through a more nuanced discussion of the film itself, interrogating the role and participation of enslaved women in the Rebellion; and why movies/stories of slavery are vital to not only African American history but in keeping the stories of the millions enslaved alive.  Brown is a professor at Houston Community College. She earned her Masters from the University of Houston and completed her doctorate at Vanderbilt University.
