What is Career Online High School?

Career Online High School is an online high school diploma and career certification program.

Am I eligible to apply to this online high school program?

You are eligible to apply if:

  • You are a resident within the City of Houston limits and 21-years-old or older.
  • You have completed eighth grade and wish to earn your high school diploma.

Will I receive my GED?

No. This is not a GED program. Successful graduates will earn a high school diploma and a career certificate through an accredited high school.

What is the difference between a GED and a high school diploma?

Some colleges, institutions and organizations require a high school diploma and may not accept the GED. In addition to receiving a high school diploma, you also earn a career certificate and complete additional job preparation documents and training.

What type of career certification can I pursue?

You may earn a certificate in the following areas:

  • Childcare and Education
  • Certified Protection Officer (Security Officer)
  • Office Management
  • Certified Transportation Services (Trucker/Commercial Driver)
  • Homeland Security
  • General Career Preparation
  • Retail Customer Service Skills
  • Food Service and Customer Service Skills

Is all coursework web-based?

Yes. Computers are available at all HPL locations.

Is all coursework in English?

Yes. At this time, all coursework is available in English only.

How long will it take to complete the program?

You will be given up to 18 months to complete the program, which consists of 18 credits. You may transfer up to 14 credits from your former high school. Depending on how many credits you transfer, the program can be completed in as few as five months.

What is the history of Career Online High School?

Career Online High School began in 2011 and was accredited in February 2012. Since February 2012, 819 students have enrolled in the program with a retention rate of 73%.

Is Career Online High School accredited?

Career Online High School is accredited as an online school district by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seal. Are the Career Online High School staff credentialed?

Yes, all instructors are state-certified.

When is its staff available to assist students?

Most of the academic coaches and academic support instructors are located in Florida. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time; however, coaches have evening hours twice a week (hours will likely be expanded). An academic coach will welcome the student initially and then reach out to all students at least once every two weeks – and more frequently for students needing additional assistance.

How do I get started?

Complete an online self-assessment and a two-week prerequisite course. After you have successfully finished the self-assessment and the prerequisite course, you will be invited to an in-person interview. After the interview, your application will be reviewed for a scholarship award to attend Career Online High School.

Houston Public Library Is Helping Adults Earn High School Diploma

Library System will award scholarships for the Career Online High School program to qualified library customers looking to earn a diploma.

The Houston Public Library (HPL) is offering qualified library customers the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, a free program offered by Gale, a Cengage company. Part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district, Career Online High School is specifically designed to reengage adults into the education system and prepare them for entry into post-secondary career education or the workforce. This is not a GED program!

HPL will award scholarships for the Career Online High School program to qualified library customers looking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers. Once enrolled, Career Online High School pairs each student with an Academic Coach, who assists with developing an individual career plan, offers ongoing guidance and encouragement, evaluates performance, and connects the learner with the resources needed to demonstrate mastery of the course material. Classes are supported by board-certified instructors and students have 24/7 access to the online learning platform.
