Super Bowl Sunday is rapidly approaching and this year the game is to be played right here in NRG Stadium.

This is the 50th anniversary year of the first Super Bowl, played on January 15, 1967.

It's also the third time the Super Bowl has been played in our city: the first time was Super Bowl VIII in 1974 and again, Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.

Super Bowl VIII was played on January 13, 1974 at Rice Stadium, the first time the game site was not an NFL franchise. It was also the first game to be held outside of Los Angeles, Miami or New Orleans. Interestingly, it was the last Super Bowl to feature goal posts at the front of the end zone, instead of the back. The game pitted the Minnesota Vikings against the Miami Dolphins. The game was largely dominated by the Dolphins, who scored 24 unanswered points during the first three quarters, including two touchdowns on their first two drives. The Dolphins' Larry Csonka became the first running back to be named Super Bowl MVP; both his 145 rushing yards and his 33 carries were Super Bowl records.

Visit the Houston Metropolitan Research Center, located in the historic Julia Ideson Building to view these and other photos from Super Bowl VIII. The Maimi Dolphins won their second consecutive Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings at Super Bowl VIII. We look forward to making new Super Bowl history this weekend. If you were lucky enough to attend any of these games, share your story.
